Hainan Shaoye

Hainan Shaoye happens to be one of the hottest places to eat at the moment, with long queues and lots of buzz. Once you've been, though, you wonder why. Their signature dish is Hainan Chicken Rice and it is nice enough, but you'll wonder why they charge so much for what turns out to be homeopathic quantities of chicken.
Worth trying the Hainan Chicken Rice but be prepared to have to order something else.

The chicken satay is rather limp and unimpressive, and the seafood laksa is very different to traditional Nonya style laksa.

Anthony's Catch at Sai Kung

This is for those people who love seafood and seeking for an semi-romantic atmosphere, away from the city. This is the first time for me visitng this nice restaurant at Sai Kung (its located on the main road. Sorry I forgot to get a business card but you cna easily ask for their telephone no. via 1083). We ordered the clam chowder, a sausage pasta and "Anthony's Bouillabaisse - seafood stew". The Bouillabaisse was my favourite dish for the night. The serving is big with lots n' lots of seafood, including prawns, fishes, scallops and very very fresh clams, served in a very very delicious herby broth. The broth is surperb!! Must Must TRY!! YUMMM! Since I only had a mooncake for lunch, no food for dinner then another mooncake for super yesterday, and today only had a piece of bread for lunch, we stuffed ourselves madly tonight. So we ended up ordering a decaf-coffee each to neutralise our food intake for the night. I can't belive I ordered a decaf. I have always hated decaf coffee and I finally had one tonight. And surprisely I quite enjoyed it tonight. Is it the environment, or the actual coffee I enjoyed .. I don't know lei ...

Amigo's

I think a visit to Amigo's must be part of many people's childhood memories. When I was a kid, I loved going to Amigo's as they they would always have matchsticks specially engraved with my name on it before I arrived, which made me feel so special!

After so many years, nothing has changed. We still get the embossed notepads (see photo - although my name isn't Mr Chow!). They still serve you sorbet (to cleanse the palate) before the main course - which, for me, was a delicious Lobster Thermidor, smothered with a creamy rich cheese sauce and studded with mushrooms. Its so big and rich that 2 people can share this as a main course!

Towards the end of the meal, the performers come to sing at your table, and ladies are presented with a rose. True old fashioned charm!

謝記魚蛋(Tse Gay): Fish Ball and Fish Cake Noodles

WOW!! Tse Gay Fish Ball Noodles!! I am sure you guys have heard of it hey? So have I but surprisely it is my first time visiting this long long famous fish ball place. Don't expect a very decent place. It is reasonably clean, packed with ppl and the moment you walk in, you can just smell a strong and delicious tasty fishy soup smell. You have to get abit more aggressive to scan when you walk in, to scan who is about to leave, and line up behind them to grab your seats. The dish I recommend would definitely be fish ball and fish cake combo noodles. It sounds very typical is it is definitely a must try - especially for the first timer. We have also orderd a bowl of fish bunch to try! It was great!! If you drive, you can simply park at nearby streets. It is pretty safe. Or you can simply take a taxi there (The address is Hong Kong Boy, Old Big Street, Tse Gay Fish Ball Noodle Shop haah .. dun you just love my translation???). Enjoy!

Egg tart vs egg tart

Recently I decided to do an independent taste test : comparing Tai Cheong's famous egg tarts against the mini version from ABC bakery. ABC lies just a few steps away fr0m Tai Cheong, and is a well kept secret that not many people know about!

First stop - ABC. When I got to the shop, there were several customers already waiting for a new tray to come out of the oven. Everyone was quite excited when it finally arrived, and the wonderful smell of egg tarts - so fresh it was almost runny in the centre - filled the entire shop. It was well worth the wait! Their small size made them easier to handle. The filling is quite milky and custardy compared to normal egg tarts, and the pastry was perfect - it tastes of shortbread, but lighter and more delicate and not too sweet!

Then, on to Tai Cheong. Lord Patten was staring at me from his photograph behind the cashier as I paid. The tarts are also very good - the filling was superb, with a very egg-y taste and a firmer texture, a bit like creme caramel. The pastry was quite thick however, and a bit cumbersome to eat.

Overall - both are very good - but the winner is ABC!

Monde: nice coffee, delicious banana cake serve in a very relaxing environment

I am a coffee lover (well to be specific, I am a latte lover hehe). I have always been looking for a coffee shop in Hong Kong for a nice coffee. To me, a nice coffee latte has to have a balance taste of milk and coffee, the milk has to taste milky enough (hey! Alot of milk in HK looks like milk but taste like water!), and it has to be in a right temperature at serve. Monde has definitely meet all these requirements. And more .. they do not just make good coffee, their banana cake is absolutely marvelous! It has a very tasty smell of banana, very very moist and not too sweet. You can definitely ask to buy a whole loaf of the cake (at price $98/loaf) and if you cannot finish it all, always welcome to call me to help you out on that! Hey! Thats what friends are for!!
